Mr. Biebelberg is going to Washington.

Dayton student, Patch contributor and Springfield First Aid Squad volunteer Brett Biebelberg has been chosen as one of two delegates representing New Jersey at the United States Senate Youth Program in March.

The United States Senate Youth Program is a highly competitive merit-based event that brings 104 of the nation’s best and brightest high school students to Washington, D.C. for an intensive weeklong study of the federal government and the people who lead it.

"The application process was rigorous," Biebelberg said in an email. "In about a week's time, I had to complete an information profile, write an essay, and collect multiple letters of recommendation."

The program aims to give the student delegates a more profound knowledge of the American political process and a lifelong commitment to public service. The program is fully supported by the Hearst Foundations, which provides provide each of the delegates with a $5,000 undergraduate college scholarship with encouragement to continue coursework in government, history and public affairs.

"I am beyond honored to have the opportunity to represent the state of New Jersey at the program," Biebelberg said. "In one sense, I consider the selection a validation of all I have been doing for the past four or five years.  I know that I would not have been able to achieve this were it not for the support I receive from my family, friends, teachers, and community.  But it also goes to show that Dayton students do great things!"

Biebelberg will join Julia Rivara of Blairstown at the weeklong program. New Jersey Commissioner of Education Christopher Cerf chose the two delegates.

While in Washington the student delegates will attend meetings and briefings with Senators and Congressional staff, the President, a Justice of the Supreme Court, leaders of cabinet agencies, an Ambassador to the United States and top members of the national media. The students will also tour many of the national monuments and several museums and they will stay at the historic Mayflower Hotel in downtown Washington, D.C.

"I'm looking forward to meeting other students from across the country during Washington Week and sharing all I learn and experience upon my return," Biebelberg said.

As is noted in his official bio on a press release from Senators Frank Lautenberg and Robert Menendez, Biebelberg attends Jonathan Dayton High School and serves as president of Student Council. In addition, he’s the newspaper editor-in-chief, and vice president of the N.J. Junior State of America chapter. He is a peer leader, Gay Straight Alliance charter member, and belongs to the National and Spanish National Honor Societies. Brett chairs the community blood drive, and is the cadet leader and volunteer first responder at the Springfield First Aid Squad.

Graduates of the program include Senator Susan Collins, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, Congressman Cory Gardner and former Presidential advisor Karl Rove.
