Downed Wires and Caution Tape Mark "Top" of Springfield

Neighborhood still showing signs of battering from storm.

While much of Springfield is back to business as usual, the neighborhoods closest to Summit and highest in elevation were still dealing with a dozens of broken wires and cordoned off areas as of 2 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 31.

The neighborhood, nicknamed "the top," because of its elevation, seemed disproportionally affected by the snowstorm, with many roads difficult to navigate due to felled power lines.

In a afternoon notice to parents, Thelma L. Sandmeier Elementary School Principal Hillary Corburn announced the school would not provide transportation to the top of Springfield until further notice. She advised to check the district website for any and all updates.

I live in ShortHills Club Village apartments and have no power, heat or hot water since early Sunday. All around us there is power. No word as to when power will be restored either.

It's easy to say 'refer to the website' isn't it? Unless you are living under this mess you cannot understand how stressful it is. Shame on Everyone that makes decisions without considering 'everyone'. Afterall, in school, if you leave out ONE child, you're on the wrong... within our society, there are many people who are left out to fend for themselves! It is a very confusing message that these kids are getting from our leaders in Springfield!!!!!

Let's spend our money on Springfield infrastructure improvements rather than a turf field. In fact, let's have a public vote so the citizens can decide.

Why can't someone come up with 1 or 2 or 3 "safe" areas at "the top" that buses can get to safely and pickup the kids there. Sure they won't get picked up in front of their house, but maybe they can get to a location where the buses can get em? Anyone thought of that? I am sure (or hope) by now at least the FD has been through the area and at least "safely secured" down lines and trees to at least make it happen. Sorry but I do not live on top but it seems a little planning and thought of rendevous-ing the kids may work. Especially if there is still no power up there, being is school where it is warm and keeping some mental sanity should be worth it.
