Emergency Preparedness Information Bulletin from Mayor Shehady
Official provides information in advance of storm.
In light of potential weather conditions and forecasts about “Sandy”, the Township of Springfield is actively monitoring the approaching major storm and we have initiated inter-departmental communication as well as talks with County, State and Federal officials to take the steps necessary at this time. We understand any concerns that may exist and we have the appropriate municipal officials at the ready to deal with the weather situation. Planning meetings are scheduled and information or details will be released as soon as they are available.
Residents are encouraged to check all pumps, chain saws, generators and other emergency equipment. Residents should visit the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management “Ready” website for hurricane preparedness.

- Springfield Business Improvement District Presentation & Report (originally scheduled for Monday, October 29) has been postponed and a new date will be announced
- New Jersey Department of Transportation Morris Avenue (from Mountain Avenue to Short Hills Avenue) repaving project (originally scheduled to begin Thursday, October 25) has been postponed and a new date will be announced

In all seriousness, this is the time to use the reverse 911 phone system to inform and advise residents instead of all the other unnecessary times its been used. This message should have been sent after the phone message and not before it and it should have also been used to tell residents to avoid placing leaves in the street before the heavy rains.
And what about the people who don't read The Patch, how are they suppose to see this notice?

The additional debris on our streets is a serious concern. Are we not able to organize ourselves sufficiently to go door to door and tell our own neighbors that they must move those leaves into bags, into their garages or simply just away from storm sewers? Robo dialing is good, but what about simple civic participation? How about Scout troops taking this on, houses of worship or other groups just getting up and doing it! If we cannot rise to the occasion of ridding our streets of leaves, then we are really a pathetic lot.

As the rain and wind hit us over the predicted 3 day storm, infront of the high school sits a mountain of dirt from the work on the field. It is a very short distance from the river. As the water rises what is being done to prevent it from being washed into the river and forming a dam and causing flooding to the area homes?

Oh, don't get me started. Our governing bodies cannot control the storm but individuals can control their own response. Just a suggestion, if you have elderly, homebound and/or solo neighbors, give them a call, knock on their door. They may need help prepping property, groceries, water, medical needs. If you are able, help those without resources and physical abilities.
