UPDATED: Lights Back On? Let Patch Know!

Let us know if you have power back

We're getting reports of power returning to Springfield homes.

So, to that end, we're making a switch. We want you to let us know where there is power. That is, where has power been restored. Feel free to leave your comments below and, as always, be sure to name your street and town. And, this time around, let everyone know when power went back on where you live.

Congratulations for stepping back into the 21st century!

UPDATED, MONDAY, NOV. 5: We've compiled a list of areas reported to have power. JCP&L are reporting that 3,947 customers are without power, down from 4,640 yesterday.

We will continue updating as reports roll in to the comments on this story and the Springfield Patch Facebook page.

Springfield has zero political pull. Unlike Summit, Millburn and Chatham which have been restored in recent days, the town is neglected. Shame on Mayor Shehady- the taxes we pay go to nothing. The town gets zero respect due to these politicians and the lower household incomes. This is the THIRD time in 3 years we have been out of power for over a week. The town is a rundown joke.

Also asked all neighbors and friends to do the same. They got power today. Hope this helps. Please keep calling. I will do the same.

Less than 600 customers restored power in the last 24 hours. Shame on you JCP&L. Folks, once this passes we need to keep the pressure on our elected officials to do something about revoking JCP&L's license. DO NOT BECOME COMPLACENT once the power goes back on. Until action like that is taken, what we are experiencing right now will be the new "normal."

Lakeside resident...there are too many problems to list with JCPL, however, the biggest issue is communication with PAYING customers. The least we deserve is an honest communication of when to expect power, not just a generalization. I have been calling all week and nothing has been done, nor have I been given an honest estimate. I appreciate all the hard work that utility workers have been doing but I fear with the new storm coming we will be out of power for the foreseeable future. The only help has been everyone posting updates on this site. Keep up the good work!

I was told from one of my neighbors who suffered through it, that last year, Fieldstone Drive was among the LAST streets in the STATE to have power restored. I wasn't affected because the two sides of Fieldstone are not on the same grid. This year my side went out first but now both sides have been out since last Monday, while the streets around us have power. I always thought I was on the same line as the houses behind me on Pitt but they've had power since Saturday night. I gear that Fieldstone will again be among the last in the state to regain power and I want to know why. I realize that someone has to be last. But walking around my block, I see no trees down on a line that is causing this problem and all I keep hearing is power is going to come back soon. Now I fear with the coming storm, people will lose power again and we will be pushed even further to the end of the line.

I'm on that side of Fieldstone that was among the last streets to have power restored... Can't tell you enough about frustration.... So, for my side, the lines run on the back of the houses and there is a pine tree sitting on the line right beside the transformer that blew up last year during Irene, it's on someone's backyard.... So yes, I believe our side will be again among the last ones to have power restored. JCPL should really be ashamed of their poor job. How can I expect my power back, when the pole in front of the high school is still down? Not to mention all other schools that still did not return and ALL Springfield kids are still home.... This situation is simply ridiculous....

Springfield is not the only town without power. Parts of summitt, mountainside, piscataway, Basking ridge and Califon also don't despite some parts of their towns having power. A few streets around me don't either for some reason. Try following jcpl on twitter, it gives a little more info, and you can annoy them that way, that's what I did. Every time it gets worse. I have lost more than a week's work and have to report back tomorrow. I am scared to go back to a cold, dark apartment and have to leave my children with family. I know others are much worse off. I am just venting. This is just so wrong. If we ever get power back we should all meet for dinner and drinks! They don't care. First of JCP&L as no say in anything. For anything to get done you have to go over their heads to their bosses in Ohio, who make the decisions. Also, First Energy weighs the options. Fix the failing infrastructure or being taken to court. They figure it's cheaper to be taken to court. And money is the only thing that matters to them.

I grew up one town over in Union. The power went out for
More than an hour or two twice in 37 years. My mom over there has PSEG. I have lived in other places in NJ. None are as bad as Short Hills Village as far as the power situation. My wife and I have been house shopping an we will not buy anywhere in springfield that has JCPL. That is how bad it is. I have been there for three years now and probably have lost a good $400-500 in groceries. Short Hills Village needs to buy generators so we at least have heat and hot water. I would chip in for this.

I could rough it but its tough when youve got a 2 year old and another on the way. There are lots of famlies
In short hills village that i am sure feel the same way.

I am very disappointed (repeatedly) by the Forest Realty (management of Short Hills Club Village) for doing, as usual, nothing to push the process along - I am sure they are a tremendous tax payer, equivalent to over 100 single family home owners, right? They also do nothing to communicate with their tenants, or support the communication of their tenants. I suppose we can all organize our own facebook group or listserv (I think we should, by the way!), but it's surprising that Forest Realty never organized that since it only adds value to their product.

Perhaps, in addition to the fight to be free from JCPL, Short Hills Club Village residents may wish to make their views known on review sites like this: http://www.apartmentratings.com/rate/NJ-Springfield-Short-Hills-Village.html

I did see a JCP&L truck at Denham Park behind Short Hills Village yesterday but apparently they were there to supervise the town guys cutting up a tree. I guess there were wires involved. It took about 3-4 JCP&L guys & another 3-4 town guys for this job & by the way they only cut it up. It's still there.

UP!! are they kidding? Do any of you have hot water? I wish i could at least sit in my tub.. dammit.. I called last night also and they said it should be back between today and tomorrow. Ill believe that when I see it. Wish I had somewhere else to go. Im 6 months pregnant and not happy in the least!

I totallly agree! I live in Troy and this is ridiculous. It is very possible that we may not get power until the 10th. I tried to explain that most people were prepared to deal with a power outage for 3 or 4 days. Not a week to 10 days! we don't even have hot water! I think JCP is waiting for the nor'easter to pass through and then they will start working on restoring our power. I don't think they have any intention of getting the lights on today because based on past history of Troy Village, the power will probably go back out.

@ Paul, I agree that these apartment complexes should have generators. We pay a lot of rent each month more than some people's mortgages. Why are the supers not on top of this and provide generators for their buildings?

I went home to Summit Hill today, on my way to vote. The electric was still out. I saw trucks on Stone Hill and Shunpike. The super told me there was a truck on the property as well, and they thought that power may return today. It is after 3pm, and no power. I didn't stay there, because I didn't believe that power would return. The temperature in my apartment was 47 degrees. I don't know how anyone could stay there. It is day 8. I don't think with a storm tomorrow, anything will be done. Maybe on Thursday, if we are lucky. This whole thing is a sham. JCP&L suck.

I strongly feel that we should not be asked to pay rent for the number of days that power was out, give or take a reasonable number of days for repair. (72 hours IMHO) They are responsible to provide tenants a living space which is safe and has the basic amenities. If the landlords have some skin ($) in this game, they will be forced to put additional pressure on the service providers.

Anonymous - I don't care whether you like the Mayor or don't like the Mayor. The problem is not the Mayor. And complaining about the Mayor for the sake of complaining about the Mayor does not turn the lights back on. I don't think I am going out on a limb here to say we are all appalled by JCP&L's apparent inability to provide the very service we pay them to provide. If I performed my job the way they do, I would have lost my job years ago. JCP&L randomly put out "restored" numbers last night that I believe to be false (they did nothing all day and suddenly 815 people were restored last night - where?) Then, after telling us all we would have power today, they now say SUNDAY. Unacceptable.

That is why you, me, everyone on this posting, the Mayor, and anyone on the town council you may approve of need to band together to explore our options once the light DO come back on. This cannot be acceptable to anyone. This cannot become our new NORMAL every time there is a stiff breeze in Springfield. Let's discuss how we address the true problem here: JCP&L. Are we just stuck with them? Can we force them to make changes? Until we explore this TOGETHER, we get what we deserve.

JCP&L are liars. Something needs to be done about them. There is a Utility commission in New Jersey. Their phone number is 1-800-624-0241 . Everyone should call them non stop and force them to get tough on JCP&L. I find it interesting how some people want to remove regulations from everything. What this tragedy has proved is that we need more regulations on our utilities. If we don't demand results, Nov 11 will pass and we will still be without power.

I was able to speak with a live person last night as well. I vented. She listened. I honestly don't think that the customer service reps at JCP know anything. I am not calling them anymore because I feel that I am getting the run around. I will file a complaint with the Utility Commission. And I think it is very important that we all band toghether and do something to get the Township and the state to investigate JCP.

Unfortunately, I own my unit in Troy Hills, so I cannot just pick up and go. However I probably wont stay for as long as I planned. I want to get as far away from Springfield as I can. I'm sick of it .

Let's stick together through this... I'm an even # building on Troy Drive and still do not have power. I had to give in and am staying with friends because it was simply too cold. I too own my unit so I can't just pick up and leave, and sadly my mortgage is underwater. Let's see what we can do offline to get things going in the right direction! We need to pressure our association to have better emergency plans in place, to get additional generators to supply the heat, and potentially look at providing natural gas lines as an option so we would have the ability to cook. We also need to do something with JCP&L and the local gov't!!! Let me know if you are interested.

I am 38 weeks pregnant, live in Troy Village, and my family has been staying with my parents in Maplewood for over a week now. I am 10 days from my due date, and I can't be at my own home preparing for the baby. At this rate, I may not even be able to bring him to his own home from the hospital. I am thankful that my family has somewhere to go, believe me, but JCP&L has a lot to answer for at this point.

I received a bill. Cannot undrstand why i have to pay for something that i am not getting. Also not sure why the community managment for Troy isnt pushing harder. I apy common charges that coers in addition to pool priviliges , heat and hot water, whch i am not receiving. I really think I should be entitled to some sort of credit or refund.

i truly feel for those of you who are pregnant and any elderly trying to get through this. I am having a hard time myself and I know it must be hard for you.

I still can't get anyone on the line to complain to or get information from (ha!). The number I call is 888-544-4877. I go through the system of reporting the power outage and line down and then am disconnected. Any advice? I hear that Millburn residents were told to call every 2 hours (which they apparently did) and trucks were at the scene through the night repairing downed power lines there, while I never saw a single truck (yesterday) at the downed wire by the high school in Springfield.

The part that I am very confused about is that JCP&L claimed on Tuesday that they would work on that exact power line on Wednesday and SHCV and environs would have power by 6.

Yet they never did work on it and now we have no idea when anyone is scheduled to work on that area.

What changed?! I suspect that other towns somehow got through to JCP&L and got themselves prioritized over our area...

Got a call from JCP&L that power for us will be up on Saturday, if not, then Sunday. At least they are calling now. Still does not make up for the length of time we've been without Power. This is unacceptable. We are on Lewis Drive. Hope everyone gets power back soon or has a place to go to stay warm.

To all those who got power congrats. To those of us on hillside and Kipling where the same pole has been hanging over the street, I guess we are last on the list. Shame on all responsible for being so unprepared. Hopefully everyone is held responsible but that probably won't ever happen. This town has been and will always be a total joke

I'm assuming that half of Troy is still in the dark, including the few units on Stone Hill Road. How is it possible that half of Troy gets power and the other half may have to wait until Sunday night. In what universe is this logical or fair? I am so disgusted. I am tired of sleeping on my brothers (whom I love dearly) sofa.

    @Lily,

I totally feel your pain. I slept in my apt at Troy Tuesday and Wednesday and it was brutal! I am staying at my brothers until Sunday and hoping that the power is back onmthen. I heard that some people who didnt have a place to go went to the Chisolm Center. I was told that it's warm, you can get something warm to eat and they have showers. I haven't been so I can't vouch for this personally, but it might be worth looking into

Here's what you've gotta do if you want to withold rent at SHCV, pursuant to section 17 of your lease. You need to personally deliver (or send by certified mail, return receipt requested) notice that the apartment is uninhabitable due to the landlord's failure to provide heat and hot water.

See this link for more information on witholding rent. We might not get much this time, but we should as a group be quick to act next time and the missing dollars will motivate them.

fyi - The landlord is not making your apt uninhabitable so you cannot withhold rent. The landlord has no control over the utility company nor control over mother nature. if you follow this advice you'll be sure to have eviction proceedings started against you. Most leases have an act of God clause.

The address in the lease should be fine. Since the law gives the landlord a chance to fix the thing that's making the apartment uninhabitable after the tenant notifies them, I don't think we'll be able to withold rent this time around. Next time around, however, we'll know how to do it.

I should say that I'm not a lawyer, and I would get the advice of one before witholding rent. Since it wouldn't make sense for us each to get one individually, it might make sense to do so as a group.

For all Troy residents who may not be on the email distribution list from mgmt., here's the email that just came out:

Power has been restored to all of Troy. Heat and hot water and lights. Boiler 5 the pipe is being repaired and will be online by 6pm (affects units 85/87/89/91/93). The system will take 6 to 8 hours to reach the capacity we are used to. We also turned up the computer temps so you may get hotter than usual. I didn't think you would mind. We may have issues with air in the system. As the office will be closed Saturday and Sunday please call the Emergency number to report issues. Heat calls will be addressed all day Saturday and Sunday on a first call basis. Please be considerate and if one room is not hot enough maybe we wait till Monday and Tuesday to address those. If you are uncomfortable we will come.

Oh ok, that probably answers why I (in building 89) had hot water (and electricity) on Wednesday night but still no heat (but luckily the electric heater I'd borrowed from a friend helped ease the chill on those COLD Wednesday and Thursday nights).
Got heat back tonight and internet back just now so it's all good now.
Thank you guys as well as the many utility/line workers for making this happen for us. :-)
