Springfield, your new supermarket is now open. Following a ribbon cutting ceremony last night, Seabra opens its doors today.

The Springfield store, in General Greene Plaza on Morris Ave. in the space previously occupied by Food King, is the tenth store opened by the family-owned market in New Jersey. Co-owner Americo Seabra was on hand for the ceremony, and proudly related how his family opened the first store as a bodega on Ferry Street in Newark in 1974.

In addition to the standard grocery staples, Seabra offers a number of Portuguese and Spanish baked goods and produce.

“We don’t consider ourselves to be an ethnic store,” Seabra said. “We’re a specialty store.”

Springfield Township Committee member Jerry Fernandez knows Seabra through owning his Harrison restaurant the Spanish Pavillion and said it would be a great addition to Springfield.

“I’m familiar with his products,” Fernandez said, singling out Seabra’s ironbound-style rolls and breads for praise. “It’s nice to bring some diversity to Springfield.”

Springfield elected officials and prominent members of the business community attended the ribbon cutting ceremony to welcome Seabra to the Township. Officials on hand included Committee members Jerry Fernandez, Rich Huber and Marc Krauss, Mayor Hugh Keffer, Committee member-elect Ziad Shehady and State Senator Thomas H. Kean Jr. Prominent members of the business community also came out to show their enthusiasm for the new market, including Springfield Patriot Chamber co-chair Scott Seidel and State Farm Insurance Agent Michael Scalera.
