Springfield Schools Superintendent Davino Releases Letter in Response to Newtown Tragedy
Counselors will be available to students on monday.
The following letter was sent to Springfield parents via the school's listserv.
I know I speak for everyone associated with The Springfield Public Schools in conveying our deepest sympathies to those impacted by another senseless tragedy that occurred in an elementary school in Connecticut this morning.
Please keep the victims and their families in your hearts and prayers, as they will have enormous grief to deal with while trying to explain it to their children.
On Monday, when we return to school, our counselors will be available to assist any child who might have lingering fears or concerns. Our Police Department was immediately responsive and had officers stationed at each of our schools during the afternoon dismissals. We continue to work with them to provide the safest environment that we can.
I would like to suggest that you exercise discretion in what your children are exposed to with respect to media coverage during the next few days. Details of what occurred might be particularly disturbing to children in varying degrees.
Please know that we continue to work at maintaining a safe environment for everyone in our schools.
Michael A. Davino
Superintendent of Schools
