Springfield Vote Too Close to Call

Vote split between Democrats and Republicans; final result will depend on provisional ballots.

With all districts reporting but with provisional and email ballots unaccounted for, the race for the two contested seats on the Springfield Township Committee is split between Democrats and Republicans.

While Springfield residents preferred Obama over Romney 3,552 to 2,857, they did not show a strong preference for Democrats or Republicans in the local race.

“The difference between Obama and Romney is about 600 votes,” Committee member Marc Krauss said before the final votes were tallied. “The difference between us and them is like 100 votes.”

Democratic challenger David Barnett garnered the most votes, tailed by Incumbent Republican Jerry Fernandez Margaret Bandrowski and Marc Krauss placed third and fourth, respectively. Bandrowski is within striking distance of Fernandez in second, with only 12 points separating her from the Deputy Mayor.

The numbers, which include absentee ballots, as of 10 p.m., are below.

  • David Barnett 3173
  • Jerry Fernandez 3141
  • Margaret Bandrowski 3129
  • Marc Krauss 3020

This year’s election has been complicated by fallout from Hurricane Sandy. Residents throughout the state have voted with provisional and email ballots that will not be tallied until Friday. Representatives of both the Democratic and Republican parties said that with the race as close as it is currently, those late numbers will become major factors.

David Barnett said that he hoped that when the final votes are tallied that he would retain his lead and that his running mate would pick enough votes to get over the hump.

“I think we need to wait until all of the provisional ballots are in,” Barnett said.

These preliminary results are pretty disappointing. While all of the candidates are good neighbors and have the best interest of Springfield in mind I think we have seen more progress made in last year than we have in the past 20 years and it would truly be a shame to see everything screech to to an abrupt halt. Let's hope the absentee ballots put Jerry and Mark over the top

I am so disappointed in my fellow Springfield residents. Jerry and Marc are such hardworking and dedicated individuals. Lets hope the absentee ballots help them win! I was flabbergasted when I heard that one of the other candidates doesn't own a computer. How can she serve our needs and get information out promptly and efficiently to the residents as well as keep herself informed.

So very disappointed in the voters in this town who think that the newbies are going to keep the progress in town going forward.
Try to work together PLEASE to get things done in Springfield for the good of all residents...

Let's be clear, however it turns out, this is no more than a 51-49 vote with a margin of 100 votes. Likely decided by people without access to social media and who are not aware of all the work that has been done by these gentlemen over the past 10 days.

This seems to defy logic. So much forward progress in such a short time and the residents want to replace the guys who have been so instrumental in that progress? Enough with the Ziad banter -- township committee meetings are a forum to get business done; not a setting for every last yahoo in town to tell the mayor how to do his job.

Our new mayor will likely be Amler who abandoned the town during the crisis.
Mayor Shehady and Marc and Jerry have be the hardest working TC members in years. This is a sad day for Springfield.
We were finally moving in the right direction ... The Mayor did a great job during this crisis.

agreed anthony. ziad needs to grow up and accept defeat like a man instead of being a whiny kid who didnt get his way. if he makes the dems life mad in 2013 im sure the dems wont just sit there and take it. both parties just get along!

Springfield needs a VOTE for mayor.. NOT a simple assignment of a non-worthy person.

If these results hold we will have Amlen or Huber as mayor. G-d save Springfield. Unlike most of the democrats who use anonymous or made up names I will sign mine. This town needs to eliminate the democrat/republican handles for township positions. They are not making decisions on abortion, gay rights or tax rates, they are elected to make Springfield better and party affiliation should be inconsequential. All the progress made will be halted now.

Warren, I agree 100% that non-partisan elections for the TC would be in the best interest of Springfield. Unfortunately neither party will ever agree to that and so things will continue until TC members are willing to step forward and work together without the political b.s.

This is coming down to absentee/email/provisional ballots.
From http://njtoday.net/2012/11/07/union-county-local-election-results/

Springfield Township Committee (3 year term, vote for two)
David Barnett (D) – 2,852
Margaret Bandrowski (D) – 2,825
Jerome Jerry Fernandez (R) – 2,935
Marc Krauss (R) – 2,812

Public Question: Should a commission be elected to study the city’s charter and make recommendations for improvement?
Yes – 1,945

Point of clarification: the NJ Today numbers do not include the absentee ballots which is why they are lower than the numbers in the body text of the story.

Yes I also agree with Warren Frank 100%. This election is not a matter of the Democratic or Republican parties we consider at a Federal or even a state level. I will openly say that at those levels I am strongly Democratic but I would swiftly side with the Republican side on a township level. As someone who was in high school last year and communicates with people still in high school, I saw the mayor work in areas that went unseen with many adults; for example, when the town found out that a neighboring town dropped out of Boy's State, our mayor called up the association and got us an extra seat immediately. Lets also not forget how easy the mayor makes it to contact him through facebook or phone; this is a crucial aspect of his position that I really haven't seen very strongly before. He also makes a point of keeping the community actively informed through these media.

I also agree with Warren Frank there should be no democrats or republicans but only a Springfield party like the Board of Education. The mayor, Mr. Fernandez, and Mr. Krauss have done a great job moving Springfield forward and during Hurricane Sandy.
God Bless Springfield if Mr. Amlen becomes mayor. Name one thing he did during the hurricane Let's hope the absentee and provisional ballots help Mr. Fernandez and Mr. Krauss.

Is explaining his position, but not being willing to repeat it in response to the same question being asked over and over really the same as not listening. He listened, but he still believed that his position was the correct one. I have watched the youtube videos, which were supposed to be an example of this worst bullying, and frankly did not see anything wrong with his behavior. This pettiness is ridiculous. Ziad is trying to actually accomplish something. What are the Dems proposing to do aside from undo anything the Republicans started? I also don't get the big deal with Westfield vs Madison. What exactly does Westfield do for us that is sooooo vital that cannot be done by Madison or someone else?
