Speak Out: Springfield Recreation, Or Lack Of Support For

Submitted by David Gerson

Tennis

Prior to four years ago, Springfield had a nice set of lighted tennis courts at the High School that all residents were allowed to use, if they signed up with the rec dept. The lights had an easy to use timer and were shut off at the appropriate time each night.

Three years ago the Board of Ed tried to resurface the courts, but unfortunately the contractor ruined the surface for everyone’s use. Two years ago the residents of Springfield were able to vote in a new field and tennis court area, full of new courts and brand new lights.

Fast forward one year from the completion of the field/courts, to the today, and neither the recreation department, town administration, council or board of education has figured out a system for allowing the residents to use the tennis courts.

It seems that the process of signing up with the town and then using the courts at night is somehow no longer a viable option. I assume that they are worried that the tennis courts might go missing, sometime during the night while the residents are enjoying playing on them.

Basketball

Three years ago the children in our township were luckily enough to receive brand new basketball courts for our parks. One year later the township decided that basketball is a bad influence on our children, and so they removed one of the rims and nets from each court, leaving all of the kids to fight to play on one basket.

Fast forward two years, to today, and our Township has not been able to figure out that if they just pick up the backboards/poles and turn them either sideways (horizontal to each other) or back to back, then 2 groups of children can enjoy the courts and have multiple games at the same time. As it stands now, the courts are an embarrassment and make our town look like it is run by incompetent leaders.

Please provide your comments and feedback so that we can work towards getting some of our athletic services and programs reinstated in our amazing community!

Thank you!
