Springfield Resident to Debut with Verismo Opera

Jonathan Scott will debut with Verismo Opera in La Traviata this Sunday.  The Springfield baritone will assume the role of Giorgio Germont in the company’s new production at the Bergen Performing Arts Center (bergenPAC), located at 30 North Van Brunt Street in Englewood, on Sunday, April 6 at 3:00 p.m.

Scott, a native of Sparta, New Jersey, has performed with The Metropolitan Opera Chorus for two seasons in Mussorgsky’s Khovanshchina, Wagner’s Parsifal and the Grammy award winning production of Wagner’s Götterdämmerung, from Der Ring des Nibelungen.  In the fall of 2013, he performed the lead role of Papageno in the U.S. premiere of Peter von Winter’s Das Labyrinth, the sequel to Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, with The Amore Opera Company.  He studied music at The Westminster College For The Arts in Princeton, New Jersey.

Earlier this year, Scott was named a finalist in the New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera 2013 Annual International Vocal Competition.  The annual competition drew applicants throughout the United States, Canada, Germany, and Italy.

25th Season

Under Artistic Director Lucine Amara, one of the Metropolitan Opera’s luminary performers, Verismo Opera celebrates its 25th anniversary and Verdi’s 200th birthday.  The grand opera company launches its new season, Vive la France, with the new production La Traviata presented in four acts with Francesco Maria Piave’s libretto.

Set in the backdrop of high society in the early 1800s in Paris, France, this tumultuous love story, shrouded in sacrifice and misunderstanding, will unfold on the stage under director Evelyn La Quaif.  The fully staged, traditional production will be presented with the cast singing in Italian and English supertitles provided.

The Verismo Opera Chorus and a live orchestra will perform under the baton of Mara Waldman.  Dancers from Roberta Mathes’ dance company, beyondDANCE, will perform the entertaining gypsy scene in act three.  Lauren Harpst will join the company as stage manager.  The complete cast will appear in period costumes designed by Catherine Mirabella and Barbara Konig.
