Springfield's Jonathan Scott Named Finalist in NJ Association of Verismo Opera Vocal Competition

The New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera announces that Jonathan Scott from Springfield, New Jersey was named a finalist in the New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera 2013 Annual International Vocal Competition.  The annual competition drew applicants throughout the United States, Canada, Germany, and Italy.  The grand opera company has held the annual international event for over 20 years.

Originally from Sparta, New Jersey, Scott has performed with The Metropolitan Opera Chorus for two seasons in Mussorgsky’s Khovanshchina, Wagner’s Parsifal and the Grammy award winning production of Wagner’s Götterdämmerung, from Der Ring des Nibelungen.  In the fall of 2013, he performed the lead role of Papageno in the U.S. premiere of Peter von Winter’s Das Labyrinth, the sequel to Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, with The Amore Opera Company.  He studied music at The Westminster College For The Arts in Princeton, New Jersey.

On April 6, 2014, Scott, a baritone, will debut with the New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera in Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata as Giorgio Germont at the Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood, New Jersey.  Tickets may be purchased online at www.bergenpac.org, at the bergenPAC box office, and by calling (201) 227-1030 or toll-free at 1-888-PACSHOW.

The New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera 2013 Annual International Vocal Competition provided an opportunity for up and coming vocalists to develop their careers, participate in master classes, receive essential feedback, and perform in a professional setting.  The competition began in November, 2013 with preliminary auditions held in New York City, culminating with finals and master classes conducted throughout February, 2014 at Liederkranz Hall.

An illustrious panel of judges adjudicated the competition made up of Ken Benson, Francisco Casanova, Nedda Casei, Anthony Morss, Joseph Rescigno, and Cesare Santeramo.  Finalists attended master classes taught by Verismo Opera Artistic Director Lucine Amara and General Manager/Stage Director Evelyn La Quaif.

 

New Jersey residents were actively involved in conducting the international event.  Cliffside Park resident Mary Ellen Rohon and Rita Tonitto from Fort Lee coordinated the competition’s activities.
