Funding to Help Create 'Walkable Downtown' in Springfield

Increased parking options will be included in project.

Springfield Township is one of three towns that will receive funding from Together North Jersey.

Through its Local Demonstration Project Program, Together North Jersey and its members are collaborating to make housing, jobs, educational, cultural and recreational opportunities more easily accessible within existing communities.

According to a press release, Springfield’s project will consist of a "vision-exercise to adopt a walkable downtown." The project will be done in conjunction with the township’s ongoing downtown redevelopment process and will cover the following areas:

  • Limit the reliance on automobiles in the area
  • Improve bus routes and stop locations
  • Increase the footprint of the downtown
  • Address environmental issues including flood-prone areas
  • Incorporate aspects of the arts into the downtown
  • Focus on providing adequate and convenient parking areas

“We hope this project will leave the Township of Springfield with a clear vision of how we can create a truly ‘walkable’ downtown and parking options for our residents," said Mayor David Amlen in the release. “We believe this will help Springfield to continue to be attractive to residents, business and visitors.”

Work on these projects will begin this summer and conclude before the end of the year, according to the release.

Other towns selected include Morristown and Perth Amboy. The three areas were selected from 12 applications received in April. An additional three projects will be announced in the fall of 2013.
