In the '90s, Lioy was the first to locate exposure science and its relationship between the environment and the health issues associated with toxin interaction. He is a major figure in defining data requirements for the National Children's Study, which examines effects of environmental influences of more than 100,000 children between birth and age 21. The study continuously works on improving the health and well being of children across the US.

Most recently, Lioy has focused on the aftermaths of toxins from the September 11, attacks. He has been constructing a timeline of exposure to the local population and worker from the moments after the buildings collapsed, to months later, and now linked to health related issues.
