Chat & Play with Friends: The goal of this group is to expand receptive and expressive language skills. Special emphasis is placed on improving pragmatic aspects of language including socialization, making friends, initiating conversations, topic maintenance, and deciphering nonverbal aspects of language. Additional emphasis is placed on expanding and improving auditory processing, following directions, building vocabulary, and linguistic concept development.
Sing Your Heart Out: This group focuses on music appreciation, using musical activities to enhance social and language skills. Music therapy is a powerful, non-threatening tool to build upon a child’s innate strengths, while gently guiding the child to an enjoyable and musically productive experience. It enhances a child’s life by providing a unique opportunity to embark upon a stimulating and creative musical journey. Throughout that journey, the child learns new social tools, improves language use and function and explores more rewarding interpersonal relationships. In addition, musical instruments are introduced and taught through a hierarchical system to create a fun musical experience.
From Jumping to Drawing: The focus of this group is to improve sensory processing and motor coordination skills through a variety of movement-based fine and gross motor activities. Special emphasis is placed on improving problem-solving skills and motor skills such as balance, eye-hand coordination, muscle strength, grasp-release and in-hand manipulation. Handwriting, cutting, and drawing skills are also focused on in a fun, non-threatening manner.
Fun with Food: This group focuses on educating children about the importance of eating a well-balanced diet. Food types and categories are discussed. At the same time, the children are exposed to a wide variety of foods in order to assist with food repertoire expansion. In a fun, social and non-threatening manner, children are encouraged to expand their food horizons as they socialize with friends.
Loving Literacy: (only offered in Program II for ages 4 and older). This group is lead by a reading specialist who is dually certified in both literacy and speech-language pathology. Language-based reading therapy implements multi-sensory teaching methods to help children improve their literacy skills. Instruction promotes improved phonics, reading, writing, vocabulary, comprehension, and speaking skills. Language-based reading therapy can also boost self-esteem and relieve academic frustrations.
Here’s a letter from our Director –
Over the past few years we have realized not only the unbelievable need for a camp like ours, but also the remarkable benefits it has for children with special needs. At Camp PAL, traditional summer activities such as sports, arts and crafts, music and games provide an array of opportunities to expand children’s communication, social and educational skills. Children participate in small group activities that focus on fun, skill acquisition and positive group dynamics. Our unique camp offers goal-directed activities that provide each child with endless opportunities to grow, socialize, explore and develop new skills with just the right amount of structured support. Language, social and sensory activities are infused into each component of the camp day with the ultimate goal of teaching the children to transfer these skills to real life situations.
Creative Speech Solutions’ dedicated team of speech-language pathologists, music therapists, reading specialists and occupational therapists runs our small, carefully constructed groups. We take pride in developing groups that both challenge and nurture each child, diligently matching children of similar skill sets to promote friendships, self-confidence and a strong sense of community. Our therapists are supported by a team of highly motivated professional interns who desire to both teach and learn from children with special needs.
In keeping with the theme of traditional summertime fun, Creative Speech Solutions is excited to house our 2012 camp at the beautiful campus of Temple B’nai Jeshurun in Short Hills. With 22 beautifully landscaped acres, Camp PAL will provide a traditional outdoor camp experience. All of the sports equipment, state-of-the-art playgrounds, nature trails, and spacious outdoor facilities are developmentally appropriate and child friendly. Equally as impressive, the beautiful air-conditioned indoor facility ensures that Camp PAL’s programming is never interrupted by extreme heat or rain.
A nurse will be on the premises. Camp PAL also strives to be a peanut and tree nut free environment. Each day, a delicious and healthy snack will be provided with restricted diets in mind. Snack time will offer each child the opportunity to expand and enrich mealtime socialization skills while gently and positively expanding food repertoires and nutrition knowledge.
We look forward to providing your child with the perfect combination of therapy and fun this summer at Camp PAL!
Sincerely,
Cynthia Marrapodi, M.S., CCC-SLP
