Starting Again From Zero: The Works of Alex Szkola - The Barron Arts Center

The Barron Arts Center presents Starting Again From Zero: The Works of Alex Szkola, a painter, illustrator and portraitist from Perth Amboy, NJ.  The exhibit runs October 8-23, 2011.

Szkola was born in Germany several months after the end of World War II immigrating to America in the mid 1950’s ultimately taking root in Perth Amboy, NJ.  Szkola studied
at the Arts Students League in New York with Social realist painters Issac Soyer and Peter Homitzky who were important influences in the creation of Szkola’s early
photorealistic style.  These paintings of the New York City urban landscape earned Szkola long term representation by the Horizon Gallery in Manhattan.

Recently, having grown increasingly dissatisfied with the direction and limitation of his work, Szkola returned to New Jersey. “. . .Subsequently, pretending I knew nothing,”
says Szkola, “I rediscovered drawing and simply started again from zero.”  The result of this change over is visually chronicled in The Barron Arts Center exhibit.

The Barron Arts Center is located at 582 Rahway Avenue in Woodbridge, NJ.  Gallery hours are Monday thru Friday 11:am - 4:00pm; Saturday and Sunday 2:00pm - 4:00pm.

The exhibition is sponsored by The Woodbridge Township Cultural Arts Commission chaired by Dr. Dolores Capraro Gioffre with support from Mayor John E. McCormac.
