Grooming by Brandy Opens on Mountain Avenue

Springfield resident and former veterinary technician starts new business at 265 Mountain Ave. in Springfield.

Springfield resident Brandy Penna has opened a business that she said she always knew was ultimately her calling.

The former Westfield Veterinary Group and Wellness Center technician has been showing and grooming dogs for years so she said it seemed only fitting that eventually she would start her own shop. Grooming by Brandy opened at 265 Mountain Avenue on Tuesday, Nov. 19.

The groomer, who tends to each dog and cat herself, said she enjoys building relationships with clients and their four-legged friends. Taking the time to get to know each animal, the new business owner said appointments are scheduled so that cats and dogs can be picked up and dropped off without much overlap or wait time.

Pets are groomed by appointment only and prices vary depending on size, breed, and amount of hair/fur. All appointments include a nail trimming and an ear cleaning. A large walk-in shower can accommodate big dogs as well as older pets who can no longer climb into a standard tub.

Grooming by Brandy's website is currently under construction but will include a 'Question and Answer' section in which Penna will put her years of experience as a vet tech to work by replying to inquiries from pet owners.

"If someone has a pet with a rash or the dog has pulled a nail out, I can offer advice," she said.

Penna, who has hosted seminars on nutrition and proper diets for pets, also said she loves to talk about helping obese pets slim down and become more active.

"I can help pet owners reduce the amount of food their dog is eating. It's gradual but people have a tendency, because they love their pets, to give them lots of treats. Ten Milk Bones a day adds up," she said. "I'd like to eventually do something like a doggie fat camp or Biggest Loser for dogs."

For now, Penna said she is busy taking care of her loyal clients and is pleased to accept new ones.
