New Restaurant Hosts Networking Event

Today, business owners are invited to bring themselves and their business cards to Sophia's on Morris Ave.

Springfield businesses owners can mingle this evening at newly opened Morris Ave. restaurant Sophia's.

The event is the brainchild of Statefarm Insurance agent Michael Scalera, whose office is also on Morris Ave. Believing there is too little communication between township professionals, he and his office manager Tricia Newkirk organized tonight's networking night, which they hope will grow into a monthly event with changing locations.

"We wanted to unite the different businesses in town," Scalera said. "I've been in business in Springfield for 10 years and I've seen a disconnect between businesses."

The initial idea was for Scalera and Newkirk to visit different businesses and introduce themselves personally. However, they quickly realized that people would likely eye a visit from an insurance agent with suspicion and decided to instead gather business owners to a single location.

Newkirk said she hoped the event would foster communication between businesses and increase awareness of town businesses.

"Springfield residents don't shop in Springfield," Newkirk said. "We're really trying to bring business back alive."

The cocktail hour runs from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. and features free wine and appetizers. Sophia's is offering the food for free, and Scalera is providing the wine.

Sophia's is located at 272 Morris Ave. For more information on Scalera and his office, visit their Web site.
