Springfield Welcomes Sofia's

A delightful addition to downtown, offering a full range of Italian Specialties

If you spend time driving along Morris Avenue in downtown Springfield, you've probably watched and waited as Sofia's Fine Italian Cuisine took shape at number 272.  In the past few years other restaurants have come and gone in this space, but this one looks to be a keeper.  Since the doors opened on Nov. 16, there has been a stream of customers that has been steadily growing as word-of-mouth spreads.

Owner Rick Pavoni has been in the restaurant business for over a decade. He recently told Patch that Springfield has welcomed him "with open arms. Everyone has been nice to the extreme." Pavoni also runs the successful Marra's in Roseland. "We came to this area because we saw a need for an elegant restaurant in Springfield." Well he was obviously a good judge of that.  Pavoni continued "We've been busy from day one."

That's really no surprise to hear because Pavoni has created a warm, relaxing and inviting space decorated in peach tones with dark wood highlights. And the food looks to live up to the décor. In fact, we've heard the place favorably compared to Millburn's Basilico.

The eatery offers a full range of Italian specialties ranging from Penne alla Vodka Sauce to Chicken Milanese over Arugula Salad to Shrimp Fra Diavolo and Zuppa di Pesce, most entrees are in the $12.95 to $16.95 price range. As you would expect there are numerous appetizers with costs running from $7.95 for mozzarella and roasted peppers to fried calamari at $8.95 and Sofia's seafood salad at $10.95 . Salads and side dishes are in the $4.50 to $8.95 range and include favorites like Caesar salad, sauteed broccoli rabe and meatballs or sausage marinara. Soups such as pasta e fagioli and escarole and beans are $6.95. And desserts include a $3.95 cannoli; the other dessert items: tiramisu, tartufo and Italian cheesecake are all $5.95. The menu states advises "Please bring your own wine to enhance your dining pleasure."

In a recent newsletter communiqué to regular customers Pavoni and his wife, Carol said: " Sofia's, the new sister restaurant of Marra's in Roseland, is now open for business… Sofia's distinguishes itself with top-grade food prepared by experienced chefs.  We use the highest quality ingredients; cook
everything to order; and pride ourselves on consistency.

Sofia's is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. (Sunday opening at 4 p.m.). Reservations are still available for Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

The restaurant is named after the Pavoni's baby daughter. Lucky girl! If the opening weeks give any indication of the place's future success, Sofia will celebrate her college graduation there.

Sofia's Restaurant is located at 272 Morris Avenue, Springfield, NJ. 973-218-6468.
