The Ice Hut Cometh

Springfield is getting a new way to beat the heat.

The Ice Hut, a brand new ice cream, frozen yogurt and homemade Italian ice store, opens its doors on Saturday, May 7 from Noon to 8:00 PM. Located at 246 Mountain Avenue—the former site of —the Ice Hut will be open daily from Noon to 10 PM.

“With the closing of Libby’s Pharmacy & Ice Cream, we thought the Ice Hut would be a very attractive addition to the center of Springfield,” Ice Hut co-owner and Springfield resident Matthew Klein said in an email.

Early word from the owners indicates the Ice Hut will offer a variety of frozen and cold treats, including fat-free homemade Italian ices ranging in flavors from mango, orange, green apple, watermelon, blueberry and more.

The Ice Hut will also feature fat free soft-serve ice cream, hard ice cream and frozen yogurt, plus a “combo cooler,” a combination of ice cream and Italian ice. Cold weather options will be available as well; in the winter months, the Ice Hut will add soup to their menu selection.

Klein said he looked forward to becoming a part of the town's business community.

“Springfield is on the cusp of revitalizing its overall downtown area and we look forward to being part of this effort by providing a quality, low-cost alternative to families who want good ice cream and Italian ices," Klein said. "We invite you to come to the Ice Hut and judge for yourself.”

In celebration of their opening Saturday, the Ice Hut is offering a free medium Italian ice for any customer who mentions reading about the Ice Hut on Patch.com. Klein, along with his wife Pam, have partnered with Rich and Lisa Irving, who own and operate the Ice Hut in Spring Lake, to open the Ice Hut in Springfield.
