After a successful first season of bringing fresh farmed
produce right to the tables of local residents, Westfielder Meredith Lehman
has decided to launch a winter produce box through her company, Just Farmed.
Last year, Lehman created Just Farmed as a way for local families to have fresh produce delivered to their doorstep weekly.
“This past season, which was our first, was a big success for Just Farmed -- we were able to bring produce from many local farms to families in 11 towns in the area,” Lehman said. “We look forward to adding more communities to our delivery route starting in May, so even more families can enjoy and benefit from locally grown fruits and vegetables.
Lehman and her husband, Brian, delivered and will continue to deliver produce to the following towns: Westfield, Scotch Plains, Fanwood, Garwood, Cranford, Clark, Springfield, Mountainside, Berkeley Heights, New Providence and limited routes in Millburn/Short Hills.
In May, they plan to expand the delivery route.
Lehman believed that the boxes were such a success last season and did not want families to miss out on fresh produce just because the seasons have changed.
“Just because it's cold outside doesn't mean you have to sacrifice the quality of the foods you eat, she explained. “And since many of our farming partners are able to provide us with delicious outdoor produce, in addition to greenhouse and storage crops, throughout the winter season, we thought our customers should have access to these local, healthy and delicious fruits and vegetables -- rain, snow or shine."
The first winter box will be delivered on Jan. 23, with the additional boxes delivered in late February, March and April.
Each box is $34 and will include a variety of produce that is available from the New Jersey and Pennsylvania farms the Lehman’s are working with. Boxes will be filled with a mix of the following: apples, pears, potatoes, carrots, leeks, yellow and red onions, beets, radishes, sun chokes, garlic, shallots, winter squashes, brussel sprouts, lettuces and greenhouse tomatoes.
