Daughters of the American Revolution Hold Annual Commemoration Ceremony

June ceremony honored local officials and volunteers for their support.

The Church and Cannon Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution held their annual commemoration ceremony on June 23 in the historic DAR cemetery it owns on Mountain Avenue, Springfield.

Members of Boy Scout Troop 73, Springfield Historical Society, C.A.R. and public joined the DAR in marking the 232nd anniversary of the Battle of Springfield.

The DAR honors all who are buried, especially the Stites family, the original owners in 1711 and all who died during the battle on June 23, 1780. A wreath made by members of the Children of the American Revolution was placed at the monument that was erected in 1896 by the SAR.

Two Springfield residents were presented with DAR Awards of Appreciation for their interest and support of the preservation of the historic cemetery. Linda Jurczak, Chapter Regent, thanked Springfield Historical Society President Margaret Bandrowski for including the DAR cemetery in her historic tours and encouraging the town to know its rich history. Township Committeeman Marc Krauss, who, upon learning of the importance of the cemetery to the history of the Township of Springfield, worked with Township Administrator Anthony Cancro to include a new entrance way in a county grant application in 2011.

The 50-year-old crumbling steps were replaced with a blue stone and brick staircase, to provide safe access for the community. The project was completed in the fall and was re-dedicated during the ceremony.  The DAR is a lineage based organization which promotes Patriotism, Education, and Historic Preservation.  More information about the DAR and the historic cemetery can be found on their website.
