Five Things You Need to Know Today

Library awards, safety tips and more.

Facts about Springfield, at a glance.

  1. With fall comes increased deer activity. The state's Department of Environmental Protection has released some tips about avoiding automobile on deer accidents. Their advice: don't swerve to avoid impact with the deer. "The animal may counter-maneuver," a DEP fact sheet said. "Brake firmly, but stay in your lane. Fatalities are more likely when a driver swerves to avoid a deer and instead, collides with oncoming traffic or a permanent structure in the road."
  2. If it's snowing, you better make sure your car is clean before hitting the road. Starting today, New Jersey drivers could face up to a $75 fine for failing to clean the ice and snow off their cars. In the past, drivers would only be fined if snow and ice fell off their vehicle and caused damage or injury. Now motorists will be expected to clean snow and ice off before hitting the road or face a fine of $25 to $75.
  3. Congratulations to the Springfield Library, who have been selected to receive the Humanities Book of the Year Award Book Collection from the New Jersey Council of the Humanities. The books, which will be circulated through the library, include The Anti-Communist Manifestos: Four Books That Shaped the Cold War by John V. Fleming and Rebirth of a Nation: The Making of Modern America, 1877-1920 by Jackson Lears.
  4. Speaking of the Library, their Board of Trustees meeting is tomorrow night at 7:30. The monthly meeting is open to the public.
  5. Starting on Thursday, Union County will be making repairs on S. Springfield Ave. The road resurfacing, which will be done at night, is expected to take six days to complete.
