Five Things You Need to Know Today

Dealing with the post Halloween crash, polling information and more.

Facts about Springfield, at a glance.

  1. With Halloween over, the kids are left with tosses-aside costumes and mountains of collected candy. If you have more candy than you can handle, take it to the Halloween Candy Buyback at Dr. Lee Kaswiner's Springfield Orthodontics. Children get $1 for every pound of candy they bring in, and the largest haul will get a $25 gift certificate from Toys 'r' Us. The candy will be donated to the Apostles' House in Newark.
  2. But just because Halloween is over, doesn't mean there's no more fall excitement. Tomorrow is the election, guys! Polls are open from 6 am to 8 pm. Not sure where to go? You can plug your address into the search field into this NJ Dept. of State website to find out.
  3. To get in the mood for political engagement, it might be a good idea to see a demonstration of what history's greatest Democracy has resulted in. Tonight, Springfield's public library hosts a presentation by history professor Eugene Lieber on America as a Superpower.
  4. Speaking of taking part in a participatory Democracy, and of learning, Springfield's Board of Education meets tonight at the Independent Media Center at Jonathan Dayton High School. Public session starts at 7:30.
  5. In a message to the Township, Springfield Mayor Ziad Shehady noted important changes to bulk waste collection: One Saturday per month, residents can drop off electronics, appliances and yard waste (leaves, grass, branches) at the parking lot of the municipal pool from 7 a.m. through 11 a.m. D.P.W. personnel will assist residents and place the items in dumpsters. The next scheduled drop-off date is Saturday, Nov. 6.
