Motorists Battle Major Snowstorm

Despite blizzard conditions, drivers took on the roads.

Residents, commuters and town workers were out and about Wednesday, braving the day's deep snow and heavy winds.

Cars traveled the roads throughout the day.  Most motorists exercised caution, taking note of weather conditions and reducing their speed.

Springfield Police Deputy Chief George Hildner told Patch there were a few reports of accidents around town, most of which were small fender benders.  No injuries were reported.

Hildner attributed the the small number of motor vehicle crashes to the lack of places for people to go. "Businesses are closed, state offices are closed, so there isn't much of a need for people to be out," he said.

As of 5:30 p.m., snow accumulations measured just over 13 inches in Springfield.  Plows have been out clearing the roads since this morning, but because of the rate at which snow has been falling, most roads remain coated with slush.
