Local group lights up town hall to ring in the new year.

Despite challenges, the Springfield Luminary Fund was once again able to illuminate New Year's Eve.

As in year's past, the group is selling luminaries—paper bags weighted with sand and filled with candles at $2 a pop. Residents line up the bags in front of their homes to create a chain of glowing lights throughout Springfield on Dec. 31.

This year's event offered last minute challenges. Organizers said the flyers typically mailed to residents were sent to the wrong zip code, forcing them to scramble for a last minute publicity push.

This year, the Luminary funds proceeds benefited the Jonathan Dayton Marching Band, and the Senior Citizens at Sarah Bailey.
