Springfield Week in Review

A look back at some of the notable goings on in the township in recent days.

Police accused an alleged career burglar with a and burglary attempts, including the attempted burglary of an autobody shop this month and a 2009 burglary of a Springfield deli. The man reportedly stole a car from the Dobb's Autobody lot and used the car to crash through the lot's steel gates. He was also connected to robberies in Union and elsewhere. 

Two men charged with shoplifting from the CVS pharmacy on Morris Ave. in Springfield . On Tuesday, Aug. 14, CVS employees contacted police, reporting that shoplifters had just fled the store. Following a chase, police charged both men with Shoplifting and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and one of the men was also charged with Obstruction while Anthony received tickets for operating a Motor Vehicle with a Revoked Driver License and for parking in a handicapped parking space. They were both turned over to the Newark Police Department for multiple warrants.

On Saturday, Aug. 18, the responded to a where nine people, including emergency responders, were sent to the hospital.

But the story that arguably garnered the most attention this week was Springfield resident Evan Ring's lament about the . Earlier this month, township officials took down select hoops in response to complaints about unruly behavior at the parks. The letter to the editor quickly collected over 100 comments with readers passionately debating the merits and downsides of having full court basketball courts in township parks.
