Springfield Week in Review

A look back at the notable goings on in Springfield this week.

Board of Education members have approached Township officials about using the  as an elementary school. At a meeting this week with members of the Township Committee, BOE members argued for . A recent demographic study of Springfield projected that enrollment will soon spike in Springfield schools. The Chisholm center was previously an elementary school and more recently a YMCA fitness and childcare center. BOE members believe its facilities could be easily converted into a school. 

In an update to the Township Committee and the Board of Education, Springfield Engineer Todd Hay provided . Construction companies are already vying for the job, with bids for the project rolling in since July 1. The final deadline for bidding is July 31. Despite initial projections that the field would be ready for fall sports, the field will not be ready until 2013 because of safety considerations and a lengthy permit process. School board members said they were optimistic that it will be ready for athletic events in 2013.

On Friday, . 78 is one of the busiest stretches of highway in the state, say NJDOT officials, and they are working to ensure that as many lanes as possible stay open during peak travel times as they resurface the road. Beginning July 20, Ferreira Construction and Crisdel Group are began reconstructing the left and center travel-lanes on I-78 eastbound local lanes in stretches of the highway in Essex and Union counties.
