Springfield Week in Review

A look back at notable goings on in the township in recent days.

Springfield sold and sweet treatery  partnered with the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation to raise money to after reading a story on Alexandra “Alex” Scott.  Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004). In 2000, 4-year-old Alex announced she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Since then, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement, complete with thousands of volunteers across the country carrying on her legacy of hope.

 , besting . Barnett and Bandrowski both garnered over 500 votes in the Tuesday, June 5 Primary, more than doubling the 211 votes that independent Democrat and former Springfield Mayor Fraenkel drew according to election data provided by Springfield's Township Clerk office. 

A on Ball Ave. near Rte. 22 in Union backed up traffic for miles on Friday, June 8. Shortly before noon, the eastbound lanes of Rte. 22 were closed to traffic and the westbound lanes were experiencing heavy delays. Clouds of heavy smoke from the blaze could be seen from neighboring towns. According to reports, mutual aid crews from Cranford, Springfield and Summit responded to the scene, along with the Union County Hazmat team.

At the May 22 Springfield Township Committee meeting, officials presented an ordinance asking voters whether they want . If passed, the question would be on the November 6, 2012 General Election ballot. While some officials questioned the need for a charter commission and wondered about its implications, supporters of the ordinance stressed that the vote was the first step in an exploratory process.
