Springfield Week in Review

A look back at notable goings on in the township in recent days.

On Tuesday, May 15, Zakiyyah Shakoor, 37, of Wilboro was found to have during a routine traffic stop on route 22. Shakoor reportedly broke into tears after officers asked for her license and other motor vehicle papers. Police reportedly found a pound and a half of heroin crammed inside a fast food restaurant paper bag in the car.

While officials tout the move as a cost-saving effort, current members of the board of health and township observers characterize the proposed changes as a power grab that disregards public health and safety.

Springfield schools report that a a student on school grounds this month. School officials say that the student followed school safety guidelines and avoided potential danger. According to a message from Sandmeier Principal Hillary Corburn, the woman spoke with the student on the Sandmeier school playground blacktop shortly after the school’s 3 p.m. dismissal on Wednesday, May 9. The woman reportedly offered the student a lollipop and asked for the child’s name.

On Friday, May 11, Library Director Susan Permahos learned the library in a contest sponsored by the EMC Corporation Heritage Trust. The money is earmarked for the digitization of historic documents. The Springfield Library plans to digitize the Donald B. Palmer collection of historical documents, photographs, publications and regalia that includes pieces that date back to 1789.
