UPDATE: Flash Flood Watch Remains in Effect

Rain is likely through late tonight.

Update 9:52 a.m. Friday

The National Weather Service has extended the flash flood watch for Union County and northeast New Jersey through Friday night, reporting heavy showers and thunderstorms today that could lead to flash flooding.

The forecast calls for periods of drizzle and possibly a thunderstorm before 2 p.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., with showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 4 p.m. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Patchy fog before 2 p.m. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a high near 77. East wind between 7 and 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Here's the forecast for the rest of the week from the NWS

Tonight: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 9 p.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly between 9 p.m. and 4 a.m. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds, heavy rain, and frequent lightning. Patchy fog after 4 a.m. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 64. East wind at 6 mph becoming north. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Saturday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Patchy fog before 10 a.m. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a high near 82. Calm wind becoming southwest between 6 and 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent.

Saturday Night: A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms before midnight. Partly cloudy, with a low around 60. West wind between 3 and 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 81. Northwest wind between 5 and 9 mph.
