Monday Springfield Emergency Preparedness Information Bulletin

Monday Emergency Preparedness Information Bulletin from Springfield Mayor Ziad Andrew Shehady.

As a public service, I have created a page to provide frequent information, updates and resources pertaining to the current emergency, “Hurricane Sandy”. To access the page directly and to share with family, friends and neighbors, visit http://411.shehady.us

Recent weather reports for Hurricane Sandy still indicate heavy rain and strong winds that will result in heavy flooding and power outages.  Springfield will be impacted by these conditions late Monday afternoon through Tuesday evening.  In consultation with the Springfield Office of Emergency Management, a proclamation of local disaster emergency has been declared in Springfield effective 11:30 a.m. today.

  • Traffic and personnel shall be restricted to essential and necessary travel starting 6 p.m. today.
  • Emergency shelters shall be opened and staffed as required.

Municipal offices and public schools are closed on Monday and Tuesday, garbage collection has been suspended for Monday and Tuesday, and overnight parking regulations are suspended. Assume any downed wires are energized, stay away and call 9-1-1.  Downed trees and hazardous conditions should be reported to Police Non-Emergency at 973-376-0400.

Residents in flood-prone areas are strongly recommended to evacuate today.  Flood-prone streets are listed on the Town website at www.springfield-nj.us.  Springfield has opened the Chisholm Center (100 South Springfield Avenue) as a shelter of last resort but it is recommended that you first shelter with family and friends.  Evacuees who choose to go to a shelter should bring personal care and hygiene items, medications, pillows and towels, as well as non-perishable food.  If you decide to evacuate your house, you are urged to e-mail evacuate@springfield-nj.us or call 973-376-1058.

Information is posted on the Town website, www.springfield-nj.us and given to the media.  Be Prepared, Make an Emergency Kit, Stay Informed.
