Former Springfield Mayor Philip Kurnos Dies

Donations in honor of Kurnos can be sent it to the Disabled American Veterans

Springfield resident and former mayor Philip Kurnos passed away Sunday.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Menorah Chapels at Millburn, 2950 Vauxhall Rd., Union, N.J. Interment will follow at the Beth Isreal Cemetery in Woodbridge, N.J.

Kurnos, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great- grandfather, uncle, beloved coach, decorated World War II veteran, and talented artist, served as the Township's mayor in the early 1990s. Among his many accomplishments, Kurnos is remembered for successfully organizing the holding of the U.S. Open golf tournament at Baltusrol Golf Club. 

He is survived by his daughter, Karen; son, Ken; three grandchildren; two great- grandchildren, with another due very soon; nephews; nieces, and his sister-in-law, Jacqueline Wellen.
