Longtime Springfield Resident Phyllis W. Sommer Dies at 90

After her retirement, Sommer studied genealogy and traced her family back to the Mayflower.

Phyllis W. Sommer (nee Morton) passed away on Oct. 30, 2013 at her daughter’s home. Surrounded by her family; she was 90.

Mrs. Sommer was born in Philadelphia, PA and lived in Springfield most of her life. She studied nursing and practiced at Overlook Hospital from about 1942 until 1945.  She then joined her late husband, Walter E. Sommer, at Springfield Metal Products, retiring in 1988. After her retirement, she went to school for genealogy and was able to trace and certify her family back to the Mayflower.

She leaves behind her children Sandie Hillard, Irene Powell and her husband Norman, Tim and his wife Kim, John and his wife Linda, and Lori Perrine. She also leaves behind grandchildren Robby, Chrissie, Bill,  Joanne, Julie, Nancy, Pamela, Patrick, Stacey, Heather, Jeff,  Danielle, Scott, Christopher, and one Great Granddaughter Jessica Faith, all of whom she loved very much.

A private memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Springfield Volunteer First Aid Squad PO Box 247 Springfield NJ 07081 would be appreciated.
