St. Teresa's Free ESL Program Enhanced through New Partnership with Literacy Volunteers of Union County

The partnership launched in September between St. Teresa’s of Avila Church and Literacy Volunteers of Union County has been a tremendous success and has greatly enhanced the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program held at St. Teresa’s on Thursday evenings.  Serving nearly 50 adults this past fall from about a dozen countries, the program has benefitted from Literacy Volunteers of Union County’s Tutor Training Program, student assessments, and professional coordination.

“By collaborating with Literacy Volunteers of Union County’s award-winning program, we have enhanced the ESL Program in so many ways,” said Esmeralda Vargas, representative of the Hispanic Ministry Leadership at St. Teresa’s. “This new partnership has most definitely helped our adult students who come from Summit, Berkeley Heights, New Providence and beyond.”

The ESL Program will begin its Winter-Spring session on Thursday, January 9 at 7 p.m.  Classes will meet weekly at St. Teresa of Avila Church, 306 Morris Avenue in Summit, 7 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. through the end of May.  New students are welcome.  Pre-registration is required.  Call Literacy Volunteers of Union County at 908/486-1777 to register.

St. Teresa’s ESL program has received a Special Recognition “Unity Award” from the Union County Human Relations Commission for its dedication and effort in offering diverse non-English speaking individuals with opportunities to learn English and improve their communication skills in their community, their place of employment and with their children’s school.   They are empowered to learn about American history, culture and the way of life in their new home.

For more than 25 years, Literacy Volunteers of Union County has recruited, trained, supervised and supported volunteers who provide top quality tutoring to adults who want to learn to read, write or speak English.
