Doctor Injured in Highway Crash

State Troopers and Springfield First Aid Squad respond to crash.

An old saying maintains that doctors make the worst patients. That aphorism was almost borne out this week when a surgeon was in an early morning car accident on Route 24 in Springfield.

Shortly before 2 a.m. on Wednesday, July 5, members of Springfield’s First Aid Squad responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident on the highway. FAS Captain Apu Mullick said they found a single patient, a doctor himself, with a severe bleed from his leg.

New Jersey State police say the doctor, who has not been identified, was hurt when he drove his car into the back of a tractor trailer. The doctor diagnosed his own injuries and requested a medical helicopter bring him to the hospital.

The medevac helicopter turned out to be a flawed prescription. When it was dispatched to the accident, it could not find a good place to land. A state trooper on the scene decided it would be faster to drive the doctor to the hospital.

Paramedics from Atlantic Ambulance and Emergency Medical Technicians from the Springfield First Aid Squad drove him to Morristown Memorial Hospital. On the way, they controlled the doctor’s bleeding and provided other medical care.

An EMT said the patient was still conscious and speaking clearly when he was brought to the emergency room.
