Following Burglary, Springfield Police Issue Alert

Burglary committed by two white males in Nissan with New York plates.

Police are asking Springfield residents to be on the lookout for suspicious activity after a house burglary from last week.

According to a police report, shortly after 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 10, a Springfield resident saw a car driving slowly near Becker Road and North and South Derby Roads. About an hour later, a South Derby Road resident returned home to find that their house had been burglarized. The rear glass sliding door had been shattered and jewelry was missing from the master bedroom.

After interviews with residents, police determined  that the two white male subjects in the suspicious vehicle were responsible for the house burglary.

The vehicle is described as being a newer looking white Nissan four-door sedan, possibly an Altima or Maxima that had white colored New York license plates. The car was further described as being very clean and in good condition. Police say it is possible that the burglars did not come from New York but rather that the car was rented from a rental car agencies near Newark airport, which often have New York plates.

Witnesses say the driver stayed in the car while the passenger walked the neighborhood, including the driveway of the house that was broken into.

The walking man is described as a white male in his mid 30s to early 40s. Police say he is approximately 6 feet tall and weighs between 140 to 160 pound. He is clean shaven and has dark hair worn in a crew cut fashion. He was wearing blue denim jeans, a blue t-shirt with unknown gold writing on the front and wore a large black velcro fanny pack on his waist that probably carried gloves and the tool he used to break the glass door and to later conceal the jewelry stolen from the house.

When a nearby resident was outside their home and appeared to be watching the car, the driver honked the horn several times. The walking man returned to the car, and the pair drove off towards route 22.

While they said they do not believe it is probable that the burglars will return to Springfield, police have issued an alert over the break-in. Police ask that residents call them if they see someone acting in a suspicious manner like the man seen casing the neighborhood for homes to rob.

Captain Peter Davis, the commanding officer of the Springfield Police, wants residents to call police HQ's if this vehicle is observed or if any suspicious vehicles or persons are seen wandering around residential neighborhoods.
