Motorcyclist Seriously Injured Following Early Morning Crash

The 1 AM crash on Route 78 left Viola Jefferson of Roselle Park in critical condition.

An early-morning crash on Route 78 near the Springfield/Summit border has left a motorcyclist in critical condition.

The incident occured around 1 AM near mile marker 47.2 on Route 78, said Sgt. Brian Polite, a spokesman for the New Jersey State Police.

A blue BMW driven by Kam Li, 22, of Bedminster was traveling westbound alongside a black Suzuki motorcycle driven by Viola Jefferson, 32, of Roselle Park.

"The BMW is in the right line, the Suzuki in the center lane, both traveling westbound," said Polite, noting that the information is based off of a preliminary investigation.  "It seems that [Jefferson] made an abrupt lane change into the right lane, into the path of travel of the BMW."

As a result, BMW struck the rear of the motorcycle, ejecting Jefferson, said Polite.

Jefferson sustained serious injuries and was transferred to the Morristown Medical Center by the Springfield First Aid Squad, where the motorcyclist is currently listed in critical condition.

An investigation is still ongoing, said Polite, and no summonses have been issued at this time.
