Overlook Nurse Allegedly Stole from Beating Death Victim

Prosecutor says Flemington man stole $640 from Mazariego while unconscious.

Authorites from the Union County Prosecutor's Office and Summit Police Department have charged a registered nurse at Overlook Hospitalwith one count of third degree theft, after he allegedly stole several hundred dollars from Summit beating victim Abelino Mazariego while Mazariego was unconscious on July 17.

Stephan Randolph, 39, of Flemington, was on duty at the hospital when emergency workers brought in Mazariego, who was suffering from severe head trauma, said Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow. Randoloh has worked for Overlook for five years, Atlantic Health officials said.

It was later revealed that Mazariego, 47, had been the victim of an attack perpetrated by several teenagers. Mazariego never regained consciousness after the attack and died last Tuesday. Three teenagers, 18-year-old Summit resident Kharyi Williams-Clark, 19-year-old Morristown High School graduate Nigel Dumas and an unidentified 17-year-old minor, have been charged with Mazariego's death and that investigation is continuing.

The night of the attack coincided with Mazariego's regular payday and family members informed police that roughly $640 was missing from his wallet. An investigation was launched by Summit police that led them to Randolph.

"This is a sad and horrible addition to an already unthinkably tragic incident," said Joan Lebow, director of communications for Atlantic Health. "Thankfully, hospital employees were concerned that a theft had occurred on our premises and alerted our Security team that then worked closely with the Summit Police in the fact-finding that led to the arrest of the employee, who has been swiftly terminated. Our hearts go out to the victim's family that has already suffered so much."
