Police: Burglar Targetting Office Buildings

Suspect carries envelope to look like delivery man.

Watch out for men posing as letter carriers: the cubicle creeper is on the loose.

Police say a burglar has broken into several offices in Springfield and surrounding towns.

According to Springfield Police, the suspect will wait until businesses close, and then enter the main doors of the office buildings, which are usually unlocked. Once inside the building, he reportedly uses a tool, likely a flat head screwdriver, to pry open interior office doors.

Police say the man, pictured in photos taken by surveillance cameras, isn't picky about what business he breaks into, but seems to favor law firms.

In surveillance photos, the suspect is seen carrying an over-sized envelope. Police believe he uses the envelope to explain why he's at the offices.

“This is a very old and quite common scam used by thieves who target office buildings as the envelope, used as a prop, allows the suspect to falsely claim to be some type of messenger/courier if he is detected inside an office building after hours and confronted by tenants still at work inside the building,” Springfield Police Detective Sgt. Judd Levenson said in an email.

The suspect, who has broken into several Morris Ave. office buildings this month, has been identified in a series of office building burglaries and thefts in Union, Maplewood, South Orange and West Orange.
