Springfield FD Responds to Summit Fire

Fire was in dowtown Summit and affected several businesses; no damage to exterior evident.

Fire broke out in the basement of 33 Union Place in Summit, home to Zappias, Waterlilies and Dunkin Donuts, early this morning.

Summit Fire Chief Joseph Houck said the department responded to an activated fire alarm at 1:50 a.m. and found a moderate smoke condition in Waterlilies. Houck said the fire is still under investigation but it appears at least one, maybe two electrical panels were on fire due to a malfunction.

Units from Millburn, Westfield, Springfield, and Union responded after Summit put out a second alarm. Units from Berkeley Heights, Mountainside and New Providence provided assistance manning the fire house.

While fire fighters canvassed the building to see if the fire had extended through the walls, all units were "essentially in a holding pattern" until Jersey Central arrived on scene to isolate power.

Once that was done, fire fighters pulled down the ceilings to check for further fire extension.

While there doesn't appear to be any damage from the exterior, Houck said there is water damage to Waterlilies and some to Dunkin Donuts and it will be up to the Health Department when any of the businesses at 33 Union can reopen.
