A Springfield man was killed Thursday afternoon when his car struck a tree on Mountain Avenue near South Street, New Providence Police said.

Edwin Ganek, 70, was killed instantly when his 2005 Honda Accord struck a tree on Mountain Avenue about 300 yards west of South Street at about 1:55 p.m. Thursday, according to Deputy Police Chief Scott Torre.

According to Torre, the Ganek's car was traveling eastbound on Mountain Avenue when the vehicle struck the curb in the eastbound lane, left the roadway and struck a tree near the corner of South Street.

Ganek was the only occupant inside and witnesses told police there were no other vehicles involved, Torre said.

Accident investigators from New Providence Police Department and the Union County Police Fatal Accident Team continue to probe the incident.
