Springfield Police Warn of Burglaries

Residents are urged to lock their doors and windows.

Springfield Police Chief John Cook reports there have been several burglaries to homes in residential areas in recent weeks.

Beginning on Monday, Sept. 19 there have been four houses broken into in Springfield. On Monday, two homes were broken into on Crescent Road. On Tuesday homes were entered on Marcy Avenue and Colfax Road.

The suspects park a car and then walk through neighborhoods looking for houses with empty driveways and no alarm systems. After selecting a house, the suspects ring the doorbell to verify if the house is unoccupied and then go to the rear to break in.

All houses had windows that were closed, but not locked. The thieves entered the homes through the windows and stole jewelry and laptops.

The thefts have occurred in homes where residents have left their homes early in the morning and returned in the evening. Police say the robberies occurred between 10:30 am to 8:30 pm.

Police say witnesses have reported seeing a black sedan occupied by two white men who looked to be in their early 20s were seen in the area last week. It is unknown if this is directly related to the burglaries but police say it is a good possibility. However, Cook cautioned residents from looking for men in black sedans and not general suspicious behavior.

“There is nothing definitive about the subjects so I do not want to put out possibilities as that tends to have some people zero in on one descriptive and ignore others that may be pertinent as well,” Cook said in a written statement.

Cook urges residents who see anything unusual in your neighborhoods to contact the police. Residents are reminded to lock doors, windows and any other lock all openings that may be used by someone to gain entry into a home, even those on higher levels.
