Summit Year in Review: Police and Fire Events of 2012 (Part Two)

A look at the biggest police and fire stories in Summit for the year 2012. This is the second part of a two part story.

August 6, 2012 –

Jose Jimenez, 51, was arrested earlier this year near the Mexican border and indicted from August 3, for sex assault charges and for endangering the welfare of a child, according to the county prosecutor's office. According to reports, Jiminez had been sexually assaulting a young boy for the past six years.

August 8, 2012 – Summit’s National Night Out Brings PD to the People (Video)

Over the summer the Summit Police Department was out for the people as the celebrated their annual National Night Out. Check out the video!

September 6, 2012 –

Matthew Fleissner, 24, of Summit was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and threats to kill on Aug. 26 at a Morristown bar.

October 26, 2012 – Handling Reports of Attempted Child Luring

Following several reports of child luring throughout Summit, the police department released guidelines on how to handle the reports they announce. The Police Department informed residents that many of the reports are not actual threats.

November 22, 2012 –

A man was arrested on Nov. 22 near Blackburn Road and Valley View Avenue in the vicinity of Franklin Elementary School. Police had responded to threats of harassment and arrested the unidentified man.

December 11, 2012 –

A Summit resident was struck by a car when crossing Summit Avenue on Dec. 11, the driver of the vehicle was under the influence of alcohol and was arrested at the scene according to Lt. David L. Richel of the Summit Police Department. Mark Boettcher, a 51-year-old Springfield resident, was driving a 2002 Toyota southbound on Summit Avenue when he hit Dennis Balasabas, a 39-year-old Summit resident, was in the marked crosswalk when struck and suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. “The driver was arrested at the scene and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, and failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk,” Richel said. 

December 18, 2012 – Summit Police Investigate Swastika Graffiti On Resident’s Property

A swastika was found on the back garage of a Passaic Avenue residents property is currently being investigated as an act of graffiti.  Sgt. Peter Frank of the Summit Police department said they currently have no reason to believe this was a hate crime.


December 19, 2012 –

Two Brooklyn residents were arrested from an investigation conducted by the Summit Police Department, the Union County Prosecutor’s Office Narcotics Strike Force and the Drug Enforcement Agency. The investigation revealed that a sizable quantity of marijuana was being transported through a shipping agency in Summit from out of state. The two residents were identified as Thomas I. Juilet, 59, and Onofrio Genovese, 53.
