Unattended Candle Draws Springfield Fire Fighters

Fire fighters responded in the wick of time.

The lesson from this story is that you have to put out candles before you go out. Failure to do so can lead to unintended consequences, like panicking the neighbors and attracting fire fighters.

On Thursday, March 29, a candle left unattended in a Mountain Ave. apartment set off smoke alarms and cast a flame large enough to prompt a nearby resident to call 911 to report a fire.

Springfield chief James Sanford said the arriving fire fighters found an orange glow behind a second floor apartment window and smoke detectors ringing.

The fire fighters forced the door to the apartment open and found the flaming candle in the room. They extinguished the candle and ventilated the smoke from the room. Sanford said several other unattended candle were also in the apartment.

There were no injuries and the apartment manager secured the apartment's door.
