78 Improvements to Close Lanes Next Week

Construction will occur at night, closing express and local lanes.

If you notice traffic on Rte 78 moving at a snail's pace on nights next week, there's a good reason for that. Sure, it may be frustrating as hell for some, but at least there's a good reason.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation will be closing down express and local lanes on rte. 78 in Springfield as workers install new traffic management tools. Judging from an announcement by the DOT, the closures will have a major impact on night time drivers.

The DOT said to expect complete closure of the Express lanes in one or both directions for five nights from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. the next morning, starting on Monday, Sep. 13. In addition, two local lanes in one or both directions will be closed from 6:30 p.m. to 5 a.m for approximately three nights on Monday, September 13. The DOT said that one Local lane will be maintained at all times, and that the Express and Local lanes will not be closed at the same time in the same direction.

The lane closures follow a week of work on the Springfield Avenue bridge over I-78 that closed the right shoulder in both directions on the highway.
