DPW Gears Up for Snow

With Forecasts calling for snow, Public Works preps equipment.

Break out the shovels and sleds; snow is on its way. The National Weather Service issued a storm watch for the weekend earlier today, and different sources are predicting between four inches and a foot of snow for the weekend. But no matter how much snow falls this weekend, Springfield's Public Works department is ready.

"We've heard everything from 10 inches to one to two inches," Springfield's Public Works Supervisor Ken Homlish said. "At this point it's not clear."

Speaking on late Friday morning, Homlish said the department was busy preparing equipment for a large storm. The 17-person public works crew was fueling and loading salt trucks, and readying the Township's five large plows and 10 smaller plows.

"In a major storm, they all get used," Homlish said.

While Springfield has several flood zones, Homlish said they are not an issue during snowfall. Topography is a factor, though, as the higher elevated area around Baltrusol golf course tends to accumulate more snow.

Homlish said main roads would be prioritized, and that once they were clear the crew would work on plowing internal streets and clearing walkways in front of town properties.

Snow is expected to begin on Friday night, and could last until Saturday morning.
