FEMA Disaster Recovery Registration Deadline is Wednesday

FEMA extends deadline for flood policy holders to file proof-of-loss claims to Jan. 23.

New Jersey  whose property sustained damage during have until Wednesday to register for assistance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Even if an insurance settlement has not been determined, FEMA officials say individuals must register before the Nov. 30 deadline or face losing the opportunity to be considered for federal assistance. Though FEMA will not duplicate insurance benefits, expenses not covered by insurance may be eligible for federal grants after the claim has been paid.

The two remaining Disaster Recovery Centers are in Essex and Passaic counties and will also close Nov. 30. , which are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., provide face-to-face contact and some to answer questions for those who have already registered. FEMA's website reminds applicants to keep their FEMA information updated, register before visiting the centers, but not to register more than once as duplicate registrations will delay processing an application.

To register or to contact FEMA, go to www.DisasterAssistance.gov or call FEMA toll-free, 800-621-3362 (FEMA). Those who use a TTY line may call 800-462-7585 or use 711. Telephone lines are open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. ET; multilingual operators are available.

In addition, flood policy holders now have until Jan. 23, to file proof of their losses.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency recently announced a 60-day extension for the proof-of-loss deadline for flood victims of Hurricane Irene from Nov. 23 to Jan. 23, 2012, under the National Flood Insurance Program.

The extension goes into effect for flood policyholders in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Delaware, Washington, D.C., Georgia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont and Virginia with dates of loss between Aug. 26 and Sept. 4.

The Essex County FEMA Disaster Recovery Center is located at the Fairfield Community Center, 376 Hollywood Ave in Fairfield. The Passaic Center is located at the Paterson Museum, 2 Market Street.
