Grace Period for Sewer Bill Extended

First bill now due Sept. 20.

The Springfield Township Committee has extend the grace period for the sewer utility bill from 10 Sep to 20 Sep. The vote was made at a special meeting of the township committee on Friday, Sept. 10.

Earlier this year, the Township Committee voted to charge residents Rahway Valley Sewerage Authority fees as a separate utility instead of as a part of the overall property tax bill. The utility carries a $250 minimum charge, and increases with usage. Unlike with the previous billing method, non profit organizations, religious institutions and apartment buildings are responsible for paying the fee.

The first-ever bills for the utility were sent to residents in late August.

"The Township Committee wanted to offer residents a little more opportunity to pay their first sewer utility bill without incurring interest after the initial grace period," Committee member Marc Krauss said in an email.

This week's Township Committee meeting, on Tuesday, Sept. 14, will be the first meeting since the bills went out.

"I expect some residents will be there on the 14th to voice their concerns," Krauss said. "So they will have 6 days after that to pay their bill."
