NJ.com: RVSA Power Plant May Have to be Abandoned
Project called a "complete boondoggle."
A Rahway Valley Sewerage Authority plant intended to convert waste methane sewage gas into electricity may be scrapped as the $30 million project nears completion, the Star Ledger reports.
Springfield, one of 14 towns that the RVSA manages waste water for, recently proposed charging town residents RVSA fees as a separate utility, and not as part of a property taxes.
The plant was proposed in 2001. Early studies projected that the plants, originally budgeted for $14 million, would save $1 million annually in power costs. After numerous cost increases and setbacks on the power plant and related projects, a later cost benefit analysis concluded that the early study was riddled with mistakes.
