Springfield Public Works Department Prepares for Hurricane

Crews anticipating power outages and road hazards.

Springfield road supervisor Robert Becher is prepared for a long, wet weekend.

Speaking late on Friday, Aug. 26, Becher said crews were being called in to work when Irene hits the area. DPW workers on hand now are ensuring that equipment is in working order and that the township's back up generators are gassed up.

Becher said he anticipated Springfield would lose power sometime over the weekend and said the generators needed to be ready to power the township's pumping stations. In addition, crews are making sure gas powered equipment like chainsaws are ready for action.

In preparation of weather-related road damage, DPW trucks have been loaded with barricades and sandbags. Nonetheless, Becher cautioned that residents should stay off the roads as much as possible.

"The most important thing residents should know is that they should all sit tight during the storm," Becher said.
