Springfield Rabies Clinic Set for This Month

Sarah Bailey to host pet vaccination on Feb. 16.

The following is a press release from the Madison Health Department.

------------------

Free Rabies immunizations for cats and dogs will be offered by the Springfield Board of Health and the Madison Health Department on Saturday, February 16 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The clinic will be held at the Sarah Bailey Civic Center, 30 Church Mall, Springfield, just off Morris Avenue. The vaccine is good for one year for previously un-immunized cats and dogs and three years for immunized pets.

Springfield Township ordinances require that both dogs and cats must be licensed annually.  This licensing requirement includes animals that do not go outside.  License renewals were due on Feb. 1. Proof of current rabies immunity, good through at least October 31, 2013, must be presented to obtain a license. Licenses will be available without the usual late fee at the Feb. 16 clinic for residents who have their pets immunized then.

Rabies continues to put both animals and humans at risk in the Madison Health District and the Northeast.  Health Officer Lisa Gulla advises residents that raccoons and other wild animals in Madison’s service area may be infected with rabies.  Any contact with the saliva or body fluids of an unknown animal should be reported to one's physician and the Health Department.

Gulla added a reminder to residents to stay away from wild animals, any domesticated animals that they do not know, and to keep yards and home surroundings clear of overgrown shrubs, piles of wood, and other areas that attract raccoons and other wildlife. The best way to protect domestic animals is by immunization.  Residents are urged to take this opportunity to protect their pets and families from rabies and comply with state and local laws.
